James Jackson and John Collins Warren call for establishment of a general hospital.
August 20, 1810
In a circular letter, physician Jackson and surgeon Warren call for construction of “[A hospital for] lunatics and other sick persons. . . which would afford relief and comfort to thousands of the sick and miserable.” Signed by a number of prominent citizens, the letter declares that “when in distress, every man becomes our neighbor.” The letter and other efforts by Jackson and Storrow lead to the establishment of Massachusetts General Hospital in 1811* and McLean Hospital in 1818.*
